PATRICK JOLLEY (°20/12/64) is a Dublin-based fine artist and experimental filmmaker. He often works together with Renold Reynolds. Jolley was a scholar at the National College of Art & Design (Dublin) and the School of Visual Arts (New York). His work was part of numerous national and international exhibitions (e.g. Moma New York, Miro Foundation Barcelona, Shanghai Museum of Contemporary Art ) as well as art and film festivals (e.g. Rotterdam Film Festival, EMAF Onsabrueck, Sundance International Film Festival). Some of his films are: The Drowning Room (2000), Burn (2001),  Sugar (2004), Sog (2007), Fall (2008) and The Monkeys (work in process).

Mekhitar Garabedian (°1977) zijn eigen Armeense (vreemde) afkomst en die van anderen is één van de thema’s in zijn werk dat zich kenmerkt zich door een grote diversiteit aan media: fotografie, tekst, neon, video, geluid, installatie, publicatie. In zijn werk raakt hij existentiële vragen aan rond migratie en verschuivingen in culturele context en betekenis. Tegelijkertijd onderzoekt Garabedian de conceptuele mogelijkheden en potenties van het kunstwerk, de wijze waarop het kan communiceren met de toeschouwer, het verbonden kan worden met een ruimere traditie of de grenzen van het bevattelijke verruimt of doorbreekt. A glance across the border in northern Russia, where the small town of Montegorsk suffers under the heavy  metal from industry. Nature is transformed into a poisonous desert: in long shots the camera probes the pale,  skeleton-like branches of the dead trees. The small family, whose everyday life Helke and Suutari follow, lives  in a state of waiting: waiting for the next German car, the next medical examination, the next holidays. White Sky exemplifies the artists‘ approach with currents of time flowing together: no one can say how long it will take for nature to regenerate itself here; yet people live here in their own time, with their own individual wishes and expectations.

SUSANNA HELKE is a documentary filmmaker, university lecturer and film theorist based in Helsinki, Finland and San Francisco.  Her films, co-directed with Virpi Suutari, play with the borders of documentary and fiction, observational and reenacted documentary, and are directed in the Flahertian tradition of documentaire joué.  Presently she’s working on a semi-documentary fiction film on young refugee boys living in the outskirts of Helsinki.  Her films explore the transcendence found in everyday moments in the lives of ordinary people – a family living in the desolate wasteland of Northern Russian, young and idle men up to no good in a remote region of Finland or Somali refugee children arguing with their Finnish friends about Allah, Jesus and the resurrection of a mouse. Her films have been featured in various international documentary film festivals and have received several awards, including the nomination for the European Film Academy Arte award for Best Documentary, as well as the Best Scandinavian Documentary Award in the Nordisk Panorama Festival, the Best Documentary Award in the Milano Festival Internazionale, and the Best Documentary Film award in the Finnish Academy Awards.  Susanna received her doctorate from the University of Art and Design, Helsinki and her dissertation was published with the title “A Trace of Nanook: Cinematic Methods Intertwining Documentary and Fictional Styles” in the Spring of 2006.  She is currently affiliated with the UC Santa Cruz Film Program as a visiting filmmaker and scholar.

Ine Pisters (°1960) is historica en cultuurwetenschapper, en was jarenlang actief in de cultuursector als afwisselend researcher, pers- en communicatiemedewerker, coördinator, editor van artistieke projecten bij diverse instellingen: PSK Brussel, Europalia, uitgeverij Ludion, (trans)Africa, enz. Momenteel verbonden aan de vakgroep Vergelijkende Cultuurwetenschap UGent en werkzaam als hoofdredactrice van het driemaandelijkse magazine Het Vrije Woord.

Bio:

Shelly Silver’s work in film, video, and photography spans an eclectic range of subject matter and genres, exploring the personal and societal relations that identify and restrict us; the indirect routes of pleasure and desire; the stories that we dream or fabricate about others, and the stories that we construct about ourselves. Silver’s art has been exhibited and broadcast widely throughout the U.S., Europe and Asia. Screenings and installations have been mounted by venues such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York, the International Center of Photography in New York, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, the Yokohama Museum, the Pompidou Center, the Kyoto Museum, the London Institute of Contemporary Arts, the Museo Reina Sofia, and the London, Singapore, New York, Moscow, and Berlin film festivals. Her work has been broadcast on BBC/England, PBS/USA, Arte, Planete/Europe, RTE/Ireland, SWR/Germany, and Atenor/Spain. Silver’s numerous fellowships and grants include awards from the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, the NEA, NYSCA, NYFA, the DAAD, the Jerome Foundation, the Japan Foundation and Anonymous was a Woman.  She is an associate professor in the Visual Arts Department, Columbia University.

Kaskade is een nieuw programmaluik van Kask: tijdens deze avonden nodigen docenten van Koninklijke Academie voor Schone Kunsten (KASK) van de Hogeschool Gent hun favoriete filmmakers uit. Voor deze eerste editie kozen Elias Grootaers, Rob Vanderbeeken en An van. Dienderen drie toonaangevende documentairemakers uit het dynamische en inspirerende landschap van de huidige documentaire film.
Nicholas Philibert (FR) vormt daarbij het kroonstuk. Deze internationaal gelauwerde cineast komt voor KASKADE naar Gent met de klassieker La Ville Louvre. In deze film toont hij het leven achter de schermen van het immense Musée du Louvre in Parijs op een vaak humoristische steeds subtiele en aandachtige manier. Sarah Vanagt (B) toont en bespreekt haar kortfilms die inzoomen op de troeblerende en ontroerende relatie tussen kinderen en de dood. De Marrokkaans-Belgische Saddie Choua vertoont Ma soeur Zahra, waarin ze een persoonlijke, vaak confronterende blik biedt op de reacties op de coming out van haar lesbische zus. Het gesprek vormt een belangrijk onderdeel van KASKADE. In deze reeks gaan de cineasten in op de verschillende documentaire strategieën die ze aanwenden om hun perspectief op de hun omringende realiteit in beeld en geluid te evoceren.

Rode draad doorheen Vanagts kortfilms en installaties is haar historische interesse in de figuur van het spelende kind. Tijdens KASKADE toont ze fragmenten uit haar werk alsook twee integrale films. In Little Figures (2003, kleur en zwart-wit, 15′), een experimentele documentaire film, spelen drie immigrantenkinderen in Brussel de rol van drie historische
standbeelden. De documentaire Begin Began Begun (2003, kleur, 36′) en de video-installatie Les Mouchoirs de Kabila (2005) spelen zich af in de grenszone tussen Rwanda en de Democratische Republiek Congo en kijken naar de manier waarop kinderen in hun spel omgaan met de dood, de
recente oorlogen in hun land, en de huidige verkiezingskoorts. Recent maakte Vanagt een reeks lichtkoffers met foto’s van bijzondere graven en grafplaatsen in Europa. Haar werk werd meermaals bekroond en vertoond op internationale festivals.
